Today, we are getting to know Charles Skuba:
What is your role at Georgetown? How long have you been working here?
I am the senior associate dean for executive custom education, a role I have held since August 2017. I also am a professor of the practice in marketing, which I began full time in 2009.
You have spent a lot of your career in both the private and public sectors, but you have now transitioned to academia. How has that transition been for you?
Georgetown is the culmination of a most rewarding career. I believe the combination of my past government, nonprofit, corporate, and entrepreneurial experiences helped prepare me for the challenges of academia. Those positions – such as at Saatchi and Saatchi advertising, the Department of Commerce, and as an international marketing consultant – allowed me the experience and knowledge base necessary to fulfill my responsibilities here.
We heard that you like to spend time in Florida when you are not working – how do you like to spend your time there?
I was actually just checking the weather there! I like to play golf and while I am not a particularly great golfer — my wife is much better — we maintain a fierce competition. I suffer from the illusion that my game will improve, and sometimes it does, but then it slides right back. I taught myself how to play in my late twenties, and I now suffer from all the bad habits I developed!
What book are you reading right now?
I am about to re-read Tom Wolfe’s The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test and then I’ll dive into his other books and short stories. I think Tom Wolfe is the greatest writer of my lifetime and I own all of his books and essays. He was capable of describing people so vividly and with great insight into character, regardless of whether the work was fiction or nonfiction.
